There are specific warning signs of alcoholism. One quick test that psychotherapists and addiction counselors administer is called the C.A.G.E TEST. It is a quick test consisting of 4 questions to determine if there is a likelihood that drinking may be a problem. The questions are:

  1. Have you ever been concerned about CONTROL of your drinking or drug use?
  2. Has anyone ever been annoyed by your drinking or drug use?
  3. Have you ever felt GUILTY or ashamed of your drinking or drug use?
  4. Have you ever drank or used when you got up the next day as an EYEOPENER or to cure a hangover?

According the C.A.G.E TEST,  ONE “yes” indicates a strong likelihood there’s a problem and need for further evaluation. TWO or more “yes” answers indicate a definite problem with alcohol and/or drugs.

Another test commonly used to assess Alcoholism used by John Hopkins University Hospital Baltimore, MD, consists of 20 questions. Here is a sample of those questions.

  1. Do you lose time from work due to drinking?
  2. Is drinking making your home life unhappy?
  3. Do you drink because you are shy with other people?
  4. Do you drink to escape worries?
  5. Have you ever felt remorse after drinking?
  6. Have you gotten into financial difficulties as a result of your drinking?
  7. Do you turn to lower companions and an inferior environment when drinking?
